A Year Before The London Olympics, The Fake Omega Seamaster 1948 Becomes Officially Official

If you’re an avid reader of HODINKEE, you know exactly you’re looking at – it’s the Omega Seamaster 1948, the watch Ben declared his favorite Omega of BaselWorld 2011 in a Letter from the Editor post. You’ve already seen live pictures too (in the same post), because the watch was present at Basel. But, in replica watches one of those weird watch industry foibles, this vintage inspired beauty with a questionable caseback (see readers’ comments here) wouldn’t become official until the London 2012 Olympics were exactly 365 days away. Last Wednesday, we reached the imaginary line in the sand and we received official specs.

The formal name of this watch is the “Omega Seamaster 1948 Co-Axial “London 2012″‘ and the tie-in to the Olympics for the Seamaster is that the line was launched back in 1948, the same year that London last hosted the Olympics. This limited edition is a more than reminiscent of the original and sized similarly too. Though, when we were shown the watch in Basel it was described as 38mm, and now that it is official, it is listed as 39mm. Did it actually get bigger? Probably not. As of March 2011, the price of this watch was set at $6800. Inside is Omega’s caliber 2202 with a power reserve of 48 hours.
